A Sweet Life: How Laniebug Farms Grows More than Berries with Lasseter Tractor Company and John Deere

Just outside Douglas, GA, you’ll find a little farm with a big story. Laniebug Farms, owned and operated by John Hayes, is more than just a blueberry and blackberry operation. It’s a place where family roots and farming dreams grow side by side.

Our team had the chance to spend some time with John and his daughter on what most would consider one of the dog days of late summer in south Georgia. Already post this year’s blackberry harvest, we walked through the spent fields where this year’s canes will eventually give way to next year’s fruit as John shared his story.

John wears two hats: By day, he’s the Corporate Sales Manager here at Lasseter Tractor Company in Douglas, focusing majorly on large ag equipment . When he’s not working hard for our customers, you'll likely find him on his own land, tending to business at Laniebug Farms, the family-run operation he started in 2016.

“I grew up in a rural area, but I didn’t grow up farming myself,” John shared. “I had the chance to go to work with John Deere, which led to my current role with Lasseter. The Lasseter family has treated me super well throughout the years, and it was this opportunity that also led to me taking on farming myself. Farming is something my family had done generations ago, but again, I hadn’t done it myself until 2016.”

His dual role gives him a unique perspective: “In my 9-5, I think [operating Laniebug Farms] does lend me some additional credibility. I can give people solid equipment advice, not just because I know the equipment so well and have examples from other people, but because I also use it myself.”

The operation’s name, Laniebug Farms, is a tribute to both John’s mother’s name and his daughter, whose nickname is Lanie. On our trek through the rows, Lanie’s grin shone as brightly as the south Georgia sunshine as she shared with us her own extensive knowledge of the crops grown on the family’s land.

“This variety is as old as I am,” she joked as we strolled. The group giggled, John included, but he quickly added, “We laugh, but she’s right. We planted these the year she was born.”

Lanie is no casual observer - that was quickly evident. While her dad described her as “all girl,” that title also comes with a strong work ethic. She’s always close by during harvest time especially.

“My favorite part is when we do the blackberries,” she said. “When we box them up, I get to stamp the boxes. That’s the funnest part.”

Many may be surprised to learn Laniebug Farms hand-harvests every blackberry. Once picked, the berries are graded right there in the field, then loaded into refrigerated trailers to maintain freshness.

“So what we’ll do is we’ll take this trailer [of graded berries] and back it up to a refrigerated trailer. The boxes of berries get graded, stacked and into the fridge ASAP - right here in the field,” John explained. “They’ve got to get out of the heat and stay cool right up until they reach the buyer’s hands.”

Thanks to this careful handling, Laniebug Farms supplies fresh-market berries that end up in stores all across the United States.

Running a berry farm isn’t easy, but with the right equipment and reliable support, John, his trusty farm manager and the rest of their team keep things moving smoothly, even when challenges arise.

“This is probably our main tractor,” he said, patting a John Deere 5075E narrow model. “We’ve got to have it for our blueberries especially.

They’re grown on 10-foot centers, so we really have to have the ability to get the tractor in narrow spaces. It’s our workhorse out here.”

The 5075E isn’t the only John Deere machine earning its keep on the farm. The team also uses:

John Deere 5100E with loader – This machine is used for tasks like mowing with the help of a rotary cutter, loading fruit, unloading chemicals and general farmwork.
John Deere Gator – John’s team relies on their Gator for quick trips around the farm and light hauling.

John may have started Laniebug Farms as a side venture, but it’s grown into something far more meaningful.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s also a break from my everyday,” he said, pausing to watch Lanie sprint ahead down the row. “It means more to my family than I can really put into words.”

The World of Vidalia Onions: A Visit with A & M Farms

Vidalia Onion harvest season brings a lot of stress to A & M Farms, but John Deere equipment has given them something to rely on.

“Today’s like, the most stressful day of the year.” That’s not something you’d expect to hear from a man with a smile on his face, but it’s exactly how our interview with Aries Haygood, President of A & M Farms, began.

You see, Aries is a long time Lasseter customer and friend who was kind enough to give our team a behind-the-scenes look at Vidalia onion harvest…on this year’s official pack date of April 17, 2024. If you don’t know why that’s such a big deal, keep reading and you’ll find out.

First, let’s talk about A & M Farms just a bit. Located in Lyons, GA, A & M Farms is co-owned by husband and wife team Aries and Megan Haygood. This family-owned and operated farm has produced Vidalia onions for over 30 years. Every spring, the operation boxes up and ships out over 80,000 pounds of Vidalia onions across the lower 48 United States.

Readers outside the growing region for Vidalias may not fully understand why this crop is so fascinating. Here are a few fast facts about this seasonal treat:

An onion is only a Vidalia onion if it’s grown within a certain geographical area. This area includes the whole of 13 Georgia counties and a portion of 7 others.
The sweetness of the Vidalia onion can be attributed to the sulfur content in the soil present within this growing region.
In 1989, Vidalia onion producers met to enact Federal Marketing Order No. 955, a USDA program that established the Vidalia Onion Committee and extended the definition of this special crop to the federal level.
This crop is so beloved that there’s even a festival dedicated to it. Every year, thousands of people flock to the four-day affair in Vidalia, GA. The festivities include everything from concerts and pageants to a raw onion eating contest!

“My brother won the [onion eating contest] one year,” revealed Haygood. He laughed as he added, “He ate 9 straight and puked afterwards. I think that pretty much happens to everybody at the end.”

Competing to see how many raw onions can be eaten at once is probably the only way in which Vidalia’s aren’t fully enjoyed. There’s high demand for this crop around the country each year, and for good reason: their sweet taste is unlike any other.

Taking this delicacy from farm to table is no small feat. Each Vidalia onion is hand-clipped in the field to ensure that each “neck” dries properly. From there, Vidalias are transported to facilities like the one at A & M Farms to be weighed, reviewed for quality control and graded. Onions that pass inspection are then either distributed to retailers immediately or stored.

This process can be intensely physically demanding, so A & M Farms has worked diligently to adopt technologies that improve efficiencies and quality of life for their team. Their operation even has a robot designed to assist with lifting the 40-pound Vidalia onion boxes and assist with moving them through the assembly line more smoothly.

In addition to their trademark sweetness, Vidalias are known for their high water content. While this makes for deliciousness in every bite, it can make storing the crop a challenge. Given that roughly 2/3 of the crop is stored to ship throughout the season, growers must keep their Vidalias as dry as possible, controlling for humidity more so than temperature.

The above means that there are roughly only 30 days available to harvest 400 acres of Vidalia onions. On average, 70,000 plants are produced per each acre planted. That means growers have roughly a month to get nearly 30,000,000 Vidalia onions harvested!

An Inspirational Legacy: Meet Baker Farms

At Lasseter Tractor Company, our favorite thing about what we do is the relationships we build along the way. Recently, we had the privilege of spending time with one of our awesome customers, Samuel (Sam) Baker of Baker Farms in Montgomery County, GA.

Sam and his brothers are third-generation farmers. Sam’s grandfather was a Georgia sharecropper in the 1930s. After overhearing about some land up for sale, he purchased what is now Baker Farms in 1940, dissolving that sharecropping relationship. This was a move that would impact the Baker family for generations to come. More than 80 years later, the Baker brothers grow cotton, corn and peanuts as well as tend cattle on this farm.

Sam’s career in agriculture is a varied one. He graduated from Fort Valley State University in 1979 with his degree in agricultural education. From there, Sam worked for the USDA with Farmers Home Administration for 32 years. He retired from this position in 2012 and has been farming full-time ever since. During our time together, Sam spoke highly of his parents. Out of 9 children, 7 of them went to college as first-generation college students. Sam credits his parents’ love and support for pushing him and all of his siblings to succeed.

“My whole life has been totally centered around agriculture and farming,” said Sam. “I love what I do. People ask me, ‘Why do you work all the time?’ and I’ll say, ‘Well, I haven’t gone to work yet!’ because I enjoy what I do. It does have its challenges, but I still love it.”

“It’s been a great relationship we have with Lasseter,” said Sam. “We’ve always had John Deere equipment. In 1952, the first tractor my dad bought was a John Deere. I wouldn’t want any other kind for two reasons: the dependability and the resale value.”

From tractors to cotton equipment and everything in between, our team has Sam covered with John Deere products, plus any parts or service needs along the way. Sam and his brothers also make excellent use of John Deere’s Precision Ag Technology offerings through Lasseter to improve the efficiency of their operation.

“I never dreamed that we’d be doing what we’re doing in the manner that we’re doing it,” Sam remarked. “Being able to grow the operation…just, wow. The first year I started, we had 170 acres. Today, we farm roughly 2,700-2,800 acres. There aren’t many Black farmers. I’m thankful. I’ve been blessed by God that I am and that we are able to farm in the manner that we are.”

When asked what he’s most proud of, Sam expressed that he treasures the fact that his family has worked hard from generation to generation, and they’ve been blessed by the relationships that have resulted from that. In fact, upon Sam’s mother’s passing in 2023, Montgomery County saw fit to name the road on which her home resided “Baker Road” after the Baker family and in her memory.

“That means everything to me as a farmer,” said Sam. “I’m proud of the fact that we’ve been blessed to live a good life and to be able to accomplish the things that we have.”

Curious what the numbers and letters stand for in John Deere’s tractor model numbers? We’ve got your answer. Each character in the model names stands for something, either the size of the tractor, the engine power, the trim level, or the configuration. Follow along as we break it all down and walk through some examples.

The Method

Compact utility tractors and utility tractors are named with a combination of four numbers followed by one or two letters. The first number denotes the size and family of the tractor and the next three numbers specify the approximated engine horsepower. The first letter following the number indicates the capability and features of the tractor. John Deere currently has four capability levels: D, E, M, and R. The higher in the alphabet the letter is, the more feature-loaded the tractor is. The second letter, if there is one, states the tractor's configuration. This letter lets you know if the tractor is set up for working in narrow settings, if it has tracks, etc.

Example Model: 5090EL

Let breakdown the model number listed above, the 5090EL.

5 - This first number lets you know it is part of the 5 Series family and is the smallest full-size utility tractor frame John Deere makes.
090 - These three numbers indicate that the approximate engine power is 90 HP.
E - This letter lets you know it is a basic tractor with few extra features.
L - This final letter specifies it is set up as a low profile - low clearance tractor.
