Beat the Heat: Keeping Your John Deere Running Strong All Summer

June 1, 2026

Summer in south Georgia is hard on equipment.

Long days, high temperatures, dust and heavy workloads can put extra strain on tractors and implements, especially when there’s still work to be done in the field, on the property or around the farm.

And when the temperatures climb, small maintenance issues can turn into bigger problems fast.

A little preventive maintenance now can help keep your equipment running strong through the hottest part of the year.

Here are a few things worth checking before summer gets into full swing.

Keep an Eye on Your Cooling System

Heat is one of the biggest enemies of engine performance.

Your cooling system works hard this time of year, and if it’s not in good shape, overheating can happen fast.

Before summer work picks up, check:

  • Coolant levels
  • Radiator condition
  • Hoses for cracks or leaks
  • Fan belts for wear
  • Debris buildup around the radiator screen

Dust, grass and debris can restrict airflow and make your engine work harder than it should.

Keeping things clean can go a long way.

Check Hydraulic Fluid Levels

Hydraulic systems do a lot of the heavy lifting.

From loaders to implements, low or dirty hydraulic fluid can affect performance and create unnecessary wear.

Take time to check fluid levels and look for:

  • Leaks around hoses or fittings
  • Slow hydraulic response
  • Unusual noise during operation

Hydraulic issues tend to get worse under heat and pressure, so catching them early matters.

Don’t Ignore Air Filters

Summer means dust.

And dust builds up fast.

A clogged air filter can reduce engine efficiency, increase fuel use and limit performance.

It’s a simple thing to check but one of the easiest maintenance items to overlook.

If you’re working in dry or dusty conditions, inspect filters more often than normal.

A clean filter helps your engine breathe easier.

Watch Tire Pressure

Temperature changes can affect tire pressure, and improper tire pressure can impact traction, fuel efficiency and tire wear.

Check your tires regularly for:

  • Proper inflation
  • Uneven wear
  • Cuts or damage
  • Embedded debris

It’s a quick check that can help avoid downtime later.

Small Problems Don’t Stay Small

Sometimes it starts with a small leak…or a warning light…or something sounding a little off.

The busy season has a way of making people push through and deal with it later, but later usually costs more.

Catching small issues early can help avoid bigger repairs during the middle of summer work.

That’s especially true when parts availability reduces and service scheduling gets busier.
